Every Saturday, David goes to visit his grandfather. To get there, he must pass in front of an abandoned house where a ferocious dog lurks. David is very scared. He tells his father and grandfather about the dog, but they are convinced that the dog does not exist and that David's imagination is playing tricks on him. David is so scared that he has nightmares. He has no choice; he must face the dog alone. Each time he walks by the house, he throws the dog a bone. Since discovering this trick, the dog has stopped growling at him.

This novel deals with a well-known theme, the fears of a child, but it does so in an original way. The text is very well written and is supported by marvellous illustrations. The layout is varied. David et le Fantôme is a captivating book that will appeal to many children.

A bird dives through a classroom window and bangs into the shoulder of Gendron, who faints. This incident, whether the result of happenstance or destiny, turns the life of the children and the teacher, Mrs. Glatstein, upside down: they discover that Gendron is "starving."

The class decides to take up a collection to help him. Mrs. Glatstein throws herself body and soul into organizing the fund-raiser. She feels guilty for not having recognized the signs of hunger. Hadn't she lived through the same thing in World War II?

The novel portrays with sensitivity two serious subjects, poverty and war, as well as the after effects they have on people's lives. It makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time. The surreal pencil sketches are humorous, complementing the text while making the situation less alarming. The duo of Hélène Vachon and Yayo, the creators of the Somerset series, once again presents us with a literary achievement.

This novel is divided into two parts. In the first part, the author, Jacques Lazure, transcribes the story of Alain Doric, a teenager who, while reading a book, suddenly finds himself in Llddz, a world parallel to our own, an immense library that is home to the ghosts of the great writers and their worlds. Alain comes back in the body of a young woman.

In the second part, Jacques Lazure decides to investigate, to get to the bottom of this incredible story. His search leads him to Argentina, France, Egypt and China. He uncovers the existence of a parallel universe that snatches readers to offer them to Nrgl, an insect-like entity made of stone. Twice a year, thanks to these readers, a pathway opens up to the forces of the Invisible, enabling them to return to the place they once occupied in the world of the Visible.

Once again, Jacques Lazure presents us with an original work. The characters are well constructed; Alain and the narrator are believable. A fascinating novel, Llddz is filled with twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.

Toupie and Binou like to play dress-up. They like telling each other stories, especially tales such as "Little Red Riding Hood," their favourite. Toupie likes to play the part of the big bad wolf a lot, but today it is Binou's turn to be the wolf.

In this picture book for small children, Toupie retells the story of this beloved tale, with some minor variations. We learn that the wolf has big ears the better to listen to him, longer arms the better to tickle him, a big smile and big teeth the better to eat him! But, just when Binou is about to eat the little red Toupie, Binou falls asleep on the bed! When he awakes, Toupie gets the scare of his life! The illustrations by Dominique Jolin are full of joy and her characters have exuberant smiles. The rich colours in this book will help you relive the unforgettable moments of your childhood.

The story of the Loyal Elephants is familiar to all Japanese children as it is told over the radio each year on August 15. During World War II, Japanese military authorities ordered the director of the Tokyo Zoo to kill all the animals in order to protect the population in the event a bomb were to fall on the zoo and free some of the wild animals.

Most of the animals were poisoned, but the elephants were too smart to swallow poison and their skin was too thick for a syringe to pierce. So the elephants were starved, dying after suffering for more than 15 days. Their keepers could not bear to watch them suffer in agony.

The simple water-colour illustrations at first present an idyllic picture despite the war being waged. Supple flowering cherry branches frame the first images, elephant trunks raised as if to play the trumpet are in harmony with the spring flora. The illustrator then uses a palette of grey and sienna to depict the inert mass of elephants. The pain of the keepers is reflected in the expression on their faces and in their bodies, bent under the weight of their suffering.

Bruce Roberts has succeeded in illustrating a painful story with great sensitivity and simplicity. He uses Japanese techniques in which quick strokes sketch and suggest. The use of calligraphy and the texture of the Japanese paper add to the authentic character of this book.
