In Le Défi, nine young authors share their universes and their imaginary lives with us as they explore the theme of life. The results of the girl’s introspection and their various moods are revealed in this collection of short stories published under the direction of Michel Lavoie. In one short account, they succeed in transmitting to us an entire range of unexpected emotions: impossible love, a vision of the war as experienced by young people, grief and reconciliation, acid humour, eternal love conquering cruelty, a tragic expedition in the search for self, the quest for happiness, people’s inability to communicate, and a soul being shattered by incest. This collection is the second edition of the Prix littéraire jeunesse Québec, which is sponsored by the newspaper Voir Outaouais and Les Éditions Vents d’Ouest, of Gatineau. The first collection, entitled Évasions, was published in 2001. This literary competition, which encourages young people to read and write, introduces us to inspired and imaginative new talents. Maxime Bilodeau is attracted to what at first glance seems to be a straightforward mystery game. Who could resist a prize of $10 000? But what’s it really all about, and who, or what, is behind the Agence Mirage, the game’s organizer? Maxime has no idea the horror that awaits her. Some of the participants are turning up dead. Or are they? She wonders if it is all the fruit of her sometimes-overactive imagination. It seems so very real and somehow linked to the terrible game. Is there really a connection between the contest and what’s going on around her? One thing is for certain: Maxime must avoid being found with an "X" on her skin! Marion’s father has found work in Montréal, and the whole family has to leave their beloved Gaspé for the big city. Now Marion understands what it is like living in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood. Many of the children in her class are immigrants or the children of immigrants and have different customs, clothing and accents. She has to change her way of doing things and make new friends. One day, Marion sees a little girl at the window of the apartment behind her. The little girl spends most of the time hidden behind closed drapes, which really intrigues Marion. Marion decides to investigate, eventually realizing that her fertile imagination has been playing tricks on her. Colour illustrations accompany the story, which has a direct style and is enjoyable to read. Imagine for a minute - just one short minute - that idiomatic expressions were taken literally. Life would be completely mad! This is the crazy world that exists in L’École, c’est fou! In it, we find more than 20 expressions that the illustrator has taken literally, often creating rather amusing situations. What happens at school when we must hold our tongues during class, dig in our heads for the right answers, or devour books? Imagine! The success of this picture book lies in the originality of its illustrations. The surreal humour of the images is irresistible; the characters are the ultimate in caricature. DSH |
