Many young readers already know Alice McLeod, the indomitable home-schooled girl who tries very hard not to appear uncool. In order to prove to everyone that she can mix with the regular crowd, Alice enrolls as the Rod and Gun Club representative for the Miss Smithers Pageant in her hometown. How can a girl from the Alternative school, who scavenges second-hand clothing stores and is interested in writing a 'zine, compete with the coolest girls in the school? The $400 clothing allowance is a strong motivator to participate, but Alice has to convince her angst-ridden, vegan mother and her down-to-earth, ranger best friend George that the pageant will not alter her personality. Her school counselor and Goose, her boyfriend, support the pageant project. In fact, the events leading to the competition are a great inspiration for stories in the 'zine that Alice and Goose are publishing together. Miss Smithers is a humorous novel presenting a lively and marginal teenager trying to find her place under the sun. -JP |
