It is back-to-school time, and Marie Gadouas -- also known as Marie Quatdoigts -- is looking forward to just one thing: meeting up with her best friend Robert, whom she has not seen all summer. Since her boyfriend Thomas moved abroad during the summer vacation, she has been in need of a shoulder to cry on. But why is Robert being so cold? Does it have something to do with the new student at the school; the enigmatic, black-garbed Amélie? What is she concealing, this girl who just arrived in Quebec from Paris, behind her ever-present dark glasses? And what is hidden in the school cellar? Intrigued? Good, because this second story in the Marie series features a group of fascinating characters just waiting to be discovered.

Structuring his text in an original way, author Roger Des Roches employs alternating voices in his novel: he shifts smoothly from Marie's private thoughts, to Robert's diary, and on to Amélie's letters to her father. A stylistically innovative book that uses humour to encourage reflection on the themes of differences and friendship.
