A father tells his son about the wishes he was granted throughout his life by five sand birds that his own father gave him one day when he was a boy, as they walked together on the beach. The subjects dealt with in this book are rarely encountered in children's literature: the power of the inner voice that guides the individual and the vital choices that shape each of our lives; the unconditional love that binds parent to child. The prominence given to the illustrations enhances the depth of these themes.
