Thirteen-year-old Amy does not like herself very much. She also dislikes being part of her adoptive parents' summer archaeology digs in the Barrenlands. Amy loves the Barrenlands; however, the land has prepared a trap for her. Through her connection to it, she is transported 1,600 years back in history. Once there, she finds that she is still a daughter of strangers, but this time, among the Taltheilei people living in another era.
