Ages 12 and up

Thirty-two events, happy and sad memories, make up the life of Ojipik, a fifteen-year-old Algonquin from Parc de la Vérendrye who is preparing to become a dogsled master. However the traditional lifestyle of the Anishinabe is shaken by the expansion of the forestry industry in the late 1950s, and on the advice of his father, Ojipik leaves his beloved forest to go and study in the white man's city so that one day, he will be able to defend the rights of his people. The author uses imagination and subtle humour to convey the narrator's memories.
