A MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL LIBRARIAN
The publishing of children's books in Canada continues to grow, bringing with it exciting new authors and illustrators and an international readership. The partnership of writer and reader is one that we encourage and it is in that spirit that we are proud to offer you this edition of Read Up On It. And speaking of partnership, the publication of Read Up On It would not be possible without the cooperation and dedication of our partners. Foremost among them is the National Literacy Secretariat of Human Resources Development Canada, with whom we have worked for the last four years and whose support has made this year's edition possible. The definition of literacy may expand in light of technological developments but one thing remains constant; a literate society is a healthy society. We hope that this publication will help to encourage the development of reading skills that will serve to make lifelong readers of us all. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of another returning partner, Canada Post Corporation. Its many and varied programs of support for literacy across Canada have won it much deserved praise. Our other sponsors and supporters include the Canadian Children's Book Centre, Communication- Jeunesse, the Canadian Federation of University Women, Access Network and YTV. Our thanks to all of them for their efforts. And of course, thanks to the many readers who have taken the time to let us know what they thought about previous editions. Welcome to the 1997 edition of Read Up On It, our annual bilingual guide
to good Canadian children's literature. This year we have chosen sports
as our theme because they play such an important role in our lives and
in our society. Did you know that lacrosse is the oldest organized sport
in North America? Or that the game of basketball was invented by a Canadian,
James A. Naismith? Many of the sports that we enjoy are reflected in the
wonderful books that we have about them, thanks to Canadian writers and
illustrators. In addition to the thematic titles, we have once again included
lists of recent award-winning books in both French and English.
