These science-fiction stories with a social conscience, which are set between
the years 2010 and 2014, feature Michel Lenoir, an 18-year-old hockey player.
He is the star of the local team, and some people even consider him to
be the best player anywhere. Thanks to the influence of Virginia, a young
journalist, Michel becomes increasingly aware of the world's profound injustices.
In this action-packed series, hockey sometimes takes a backseat, but there
are play-by-play descriptions of three games in which people face off against
robots. Towards the end of the story, Michel must skate alone against the
robots in the "Lemieux-Gretzky Challenge." By linking hockey, robots, violence
and dictatorship, the author emphasizes the importance of self-confidence
and compassion, rather than blind ambition. Michel stays true to his convictions,
vowing never again to be a pawn in a power struggle. Instead, he chooses
to put his talent to work, teaching children what he knows best - hockey.
It is a year of revelation and change for 16-year-old J.A. Brandiosa. Not
only does he have to cope with the heady excitement of making the Moose
Jaw, Saskatchewan's Triple A hockey team, he has to deal with his father's
dating, his sudden awareness of teammate Tully's homosexuality, and his
own budding emotional and sexual interest in Tully's younger sister. His
turbulent emotions result in aggressive behaviour on the ice, leading hockey
crowds to label him "Bad Boy". Alive with the plays, the passions, and
the thinking of young men intoxicated with hockey, this exciting story
is just as gripping off the ice as on. It is a well-crafted novel about
understanding oneself and others.

Benjamin the turtle loves soccer. His dream is to become the best player
on his team, but he and his teammates, Beaver and Goose, just can't seem
to score any goals. Benjamin's father explains that it's more important
for Benjamin to do his best and to have fun. The coach teaches Benjamin
and his friends how to pass the ball and to work as a team. The players'
hard work pays off when they score a goal during the very next game. Their
opponents win the game, but Benjamin's parents know that their son's friends
are the real winners and invite the whole team to celebrate with them.
Beautiful colour illustrations breathe life into this story's characters.

Ernest and his mother entertain a guest who falls from the sky! His name
is Céleste Volauvent and his hot-air balloon lands in their back yard.
Céleste invites Ernest to fly with him and he helps prepare for the trip.
Lift off is magical, and so is the view of the region from the balloon.
The landing in Ernest's neighbour's yard, on the other hand, is a bit hair-raising.
The comic style of the book is well-suited to a young audience and lends
itself nicely to the fun-filled, but still educational, look at the fascinating
world of hot-air balloon travel. The colours are breathtaking and both
text and illustrations are full of informative and amusing details. Paul
Roux is a well-established illustrator. This book introduces a sport that
will catch readers' imaginations.
