LINDA GRANFIELD

LINDA GRANFIELD

Place of birth: Boston, Massachusetts
Place of residence: Etobicoke, Ontario

As a high-school student in Melrose, Massachusetts, Linda Granfield worked on school and community newspapers, interviewing people and writing articles, an activity she thoroughly enjoyed. Two university degrees later, she came to Canada to study for her doctorate at the University of Toronto. Although she had not planned to stay, she met and married her husband, a Canadian citizen, and has been here ever since. An interest in Canadian children's literature, coupled with her love of writing, parlayed into work writing book reviews and articles on Canadian authors and illustrators. She has also done research for educational children's books, compiled bibliographies for teacher-resource books, and written and co-authored a number of non-fiction books for children. When researching a topic for one of her children's books, she likes to look at unusual sources, such as postcards, and to interview old people. There is such a wealth of information available to researchers that she finds it a challenge to stop doing the research and to start writing the book. Once the research is done, she prepares an outline and a first draft, followed by several more drafts until the book is ready for publication.
