Messages from Our Partners
I am delighted to participate once again in the Read Up On It campaign, especially because the theme this year is humour.
All of us know that sometimes reading is hard work, but it is also great fun. What better way to encourage our young people to read than to develop a publication that leads to a selection of books they will really enjoy.
This project is an important element in our promotion of family literacy skills, and the National Library of Canada has made a special effort to encourage children, their parents and teachers to exercise those skills by reading together and sharing knowledge and laughter along the way.
Read Up On It offers a variety of ideas for activities that we can use to add humour to a process that will continue for a lifetime.
There is nothing more important than to create the foundation for a love of reading and an openness to the learning process at the earliest opportunity, as soon as a tiny child can turn a page and recognize a picture or a word in those very first books.
Since I was a little girl, I have always regarded reading as a precious gift. It truly is fun, and I want to thank the National Library for offering this opportunity to show children that good books can become their best friends.

Supporting the fight for literacy. As a company whose business is closely tied to the written word, Canada Post understands the value of literacy to individuals and society and has supported literacy for the past 10 years. |
The Canadian Library Association (CLA) has a smile on its face. We are happy to be a partner in the Read Up On It program. This year families and children will be combining laughter and literacy through the reading of Canadian humour. Libraries welcome giggles and celebrate the joy of reading. Canadian children’s books are a rich resource, leading readers of all ages to new understandings of ourselves, our neighbors and the fun we have together.
The Canadian Library Association knows reading is important for individuals, for families and for Canada’s future. We are committed to bringing the enjoyment of books and the fun of reading to Canadians. The Read Up On It program’s playful theme of humour will make light work of acquiring literacy skills by presenting the best of Canadian literature for children and young adults. CLA joins the National Library of Canada, the National Literacy Secretariat of Human Resources Canada, Canada Post and ASTED in supporting this exciting program.

This is the second time ASTED has been an official participant in the Read Up On It program. This initiative underscores the importance of the role libraries play in sustaining interest in reading and fostering an environment that will encourage more people of all ages and walks of life to discover the joys of reading. We are incredibly fortunate to be able to rely on the National Library of Canada, which, in partnership with other organizations associated with the project, ensures widespread awareness of youth literature and literacy through projects such as Read Up On It!
This year's theme is "humour". We believe that reading offers a wonderful gateway to culture and discoveries. But it is more than that; it is also a source of enjoyment and amusement. The motive for the 1999 edition of the Read Up On It program is as intriguing as a playful wink…
On the occasion of this, the 11th edition of Read Up On It, ASTED wishes to commend the efforts of the different partners associated with the project, and would especially like to acknowledge those organizations dedicated to the development of the Canadian cultural community. We hope that the wealth of information offered by this program reaps many hours of reading pleasure and laughter!
