After a heavy snowfall in Sudbury overnight, the northern Ontario mining town is left completely blanketed in white. But despite the beauty of the winter morning, John is sad: in just a few hours he will be leaving his hometown. His parents have divorced, and he and his mother are moving to start a new life elsewhere. Making the best of the hours he has left, John ventures out one last time into the snow-covered streets to say goodbye to his friends, to all the people he has met over the years -- and to Griffith Street, where he grew up. Inspired by the author's own childhood memories, Goodbye to Griffith Street is a book filled with a tender nostalgia, where these memories fade silently into the frozen landscapes of the North. Renné Benoit's subtly tinted watercolours capture this bygone world with great sensitivity. A beautiful book -- and a reminder that it is never too late to say goodbye. -DSH |
