Jonathan Aird was sent to live with his uncle on Baffin Island as an alternative punishment to going to a juvenile detention centre. The residents regard Jon suspiciously at first but his attitude changes when he learns to respect their culture. He discovers how harsh and unforgiving the climate can be when he is caught in a deadly whiteout while on a fishing trip.
This novel won the Max and Greta Ebel Memorial Award for Children's Writing in 1989. Artist and author James Houston was also awarded the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children Award three times.
